The 111 Navy Chair® - Coca-Cola & Emeco
First launched at the 2010 Milan Furniture Fair, the 111 Navy Chair® has since been unveiled in over 30 cities across Europe, America and Asia. The chairs have featured in projects such as London’s Serpentine Gallery Architecture Pavillion 2010 designed by Jean Nouvel and the Tokyo film festival. It has won both the Good Design Award and the iF Product Design Award and was honoured by the Interior Design Magazine BoY Awards.
“When Coca-Cola approached us in 2006 with the idea of making the classic Navy Chair from recycled plastic bottles, we could see it was a brilliant idea – but it definitely threw us into new and unproven territory. We spent over four years researching and testing innovative materials to ensure a sustainable, durable and ecologically friendly product could be made,” said Gregg Buchbinder, Head of Emeco.
“Emeco’s famous 1006 Navy Chair is made out of 80% recycled aluminium and designed to last 150 years. Our new 111 Navy Chair® is made out of at least 111 recycled PET bottles. We use discarded plastic beverage bottles and make them into a very high quality chair – that’s what we call up-cycling,” said Gregg.
It is estimated that approximately five million plastic bottles will be recycled globally each year for production of the chairs.
“The collaboration with Emeco enables us to extend the life of the Coca-Cola bottle, enabling it to resurrect again in a completely different form – as a functional, sustainable and beautiful piece of furniture,” said Maree Kirk, Coca-Cola Marketing Manager.
When you recycle a plastic bottle, you're doing something good. When you recycle 111 of them, you're doing something great. Help your bottle become something extraordinary again.
