Fritz Hansen Environmental Policy Statement
We're aware of our environmental responsibilities. Therefore, in the autumn of 2004 Fritz Hansen obtained the ISO 14001 certification in the environmental management system.
The certification is a guarantee to our customers and the authorities that we are subject to a biannual audit to see if we comply with the requirements of the ISO 14001 standard.

The legs and frames of the furniture are chromium-plated in closed water systems and any by-products are used again.
The chromium-plating is intended to ensure the frames their long lives.
The cooling processes (water) take place in closed cooling circuits.
Any textile and leather leftovers are either used again or combusted.
Foam used for filling and upholstery does not contain freon. The foam can be granulated, utilised in a granulated product, or recycled as cushion filling. Alternately, foam and filling can be combusted (incineration facility) and utilised for energy purposes.
Fritz Hansen uses two types of adhesives:
A water-soluble urea adhesive used for bonding of the veneer 3107, 3100 and VicoDuo shell chairs and the tables.
A water-soluble or solvent-based adhesive for bonding of upholstered chairs, according to type of textile or leather used.
The varnishes are chosen to provide the furniture with a long lifetime.
Stackable chairs are given an acid-hardening varnish coating in a closed circuit where the solvent fumes are burnt and the heat recycled to eliminate emissions from the process to the ambient environment.
Varnish is applied to veneer tables in a spray box. The resultant emission is so modest that the ministerial order regarding listed activities does not apply.
From the supplier, office chairs are given a powder varnish coating with TGIC-free varnishes.
When deemed to be beyond active functioning, computer screens and other hardware are compiled and sent for destruction and subsequent recycling. Spent toner cartridges are compiled and sent for recycling/refill.
All cardboard used for packaging is chlorine-free recycled cardboard.
The packaging is individually designed for the specific product and the destination. This means that the resources spent on packaging vary from a blanket covering the articles to fully protected overseas consignments, as requested by the customer.
Paper and cardboard (from the administrative offices and the production processes) are sorted and extracted from other ordinary refuse and recycled.
The plastic materials used in the furniture are suitable for recycling, meaning they can be regranulated and used again, or combusted (incineration facility) and utilised for energy purposes. All plastic shells for chairs and other large plastic components are marked with a materials code and recycling logo.
Metals are sold to a scrap dealer and melted for recycling.
Chair shells made of plastic can be granulated and recycled.
All products are repair-friendly and can be separated into individual main components.
Waste water from the bonding processes is purified and discharged. The dry waste from these processes is burnt - and only the residue remaining from this is disposed of (by Kommunekemi).
Fritz Hansen has been granted a special permit to discharge treated (purified) waste water (from adhesives).
The wood and veneer used in the Fritz Hansen furniture production come from controlled forestry. Waste from wood-based plates is granulated and the granules are recycled to produce wood briquettes. Wood and veneer can be also be combusted (incineration facility) and utilised for energy purposes.
AG & Co. KG has the German Gold mark awarded by Deutsche Gutegemeinschaft Mobel e.V (DGM) and conforms to the RAL GZ 430 - Protection of the environment and health. ISO 14001
Walter Knoll Australia has employed John L Bates and Associates to assist in the implementation of an Environmental Management System which we expect to be third party certified in 2008.
Warranty & Durability
Walter Knoll Australia provides a 5 year warranty, excluding fabrics or leather. The highest quality materials and craftsmanship are used in the manufacturing of all Walter Knoll products.
Understanding that our products are manufactured to last a lifetime, Walter Knoll will assist the owner of our assets to dispose of Walter Knoll products in the most environmentally sensitive way at the end of products useful life. That may include the product being returned to the
factory and components being recycled.
Cardboard packing is 100% recyclable. Plastic bags are made from low density polyethylene and is 100% recyclable. Base – 100% recyclable

Our corporate strategy is focused on the concept of sustainability, which links commercial success with social and environmental responsibility.
Our core business is manufacturing, so from an environmental standpoint the key issues are what we produce and above all how we produce it. From the development stage onwards we are committed to ensuring that our products are designed for optimum eco-friendliness – ensuring, for example, that our furniture can be easily recycled at the end of its useful lifespan. We are also committed to using only top-quality materials that are environment-friendly and recyclable. This also means that we source our timber from sustainable forest management programmes in Germany, with PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes) certification.
Quality always pays dividends. The long lifespan of our furniture makes sense not only in terms of optimising your investment, but also for the environment.
Our production processes are also governed by strict environmental directives. For example, the certification society Deutsche Gesellschaft zur Zertifizierung von Managementsystemen has certified that Brunner GmbH implements an environment management system in line with DIN EN ISO 14001. To give just one example of our environmentally responsible production philosophy: our state-of-the-art UV-cured water-based paint system for wooden components is an economical, environmentally friendly process that uses no solvents and creates no waste paint."
Whenever it is economically feasible to do so, Extremis opts for the most ecologically sound solution and prefers to use materials in their natural, pure state. “Honest” materials that do not require any protection techniques that might jeopardise the environment, materials that can easily be recycled later on. That is why all the materials Extremis uses meet the highest quality standards. Durability, both with regard to material and form, is an important ecological factor as such. The use of wood for example is limited to those parts that have direct contact with the body.
Our products are mainly produced at our own factory in Denmark, where production processes are certified according to the ISO 9001 quality management system and the ISO 14001 environmental management system.
